Pre-Assessment
Group 1: High Content knowledge
Content:
Animal adaptations and behaviours which help it survive in its habitat.
Specific Animal Study:
Decide on an animal
What food does this animal eat?
How does this animal find food?
Does this animal have any predators?
What adaptations does it have to escape?
What behaviors show this animal has "adapted" to its environment
How does this animal find shelter?
What is the weather like in this animal’s habitat?
How has it adapted for this weather?
Assess Understanding
If lacking understanding, guidance is given
Extension Activity
Choose a new environment to which the students think the animal could adapt. Describe why they think the animal might be able to survive.
Group 2: Good Content Knowledge
Content: Animal adaptations which help it survive in its habitat.
Specific Animal Study:
What adaptations does this animal have for its habitat?
Where would you find this animal's shelter?
What food does this animal eat?
How does this animal find food?
Does this animal have any predators?
How does it escape?
Assess understanding
If lacking understanding, guidance is given
Extension Activity
Explain how the animal behaves in its habitat.
Group 3: Low Content knowledge/Special Needs Students
Guided Content: Animal needs, classifcation and adaptations
General Animal Study
The 5 animal needs
food, air, water, shelter, space
The 5 main (vertebrate) animal classifications.
reptile, amphibian, mammal, bird, fish
The features of each classification.
Birds: warm-blooded; feathers; wings; beak; lays eggs
Amphibian: cold-blooded; moist skin; lives life partly in water, partly on land; lays eggs
Mammal: warm-blooded; has fur/hair; generally gives birth to live young; feeds milk to the young.
Fish: cold-blooded; live in water; has fins/tail; scales
Reptiles: dry, leathery skin; cold-blooded
Adaptations which help animals survive.
Birds: feathers, wings, beak etc.
Frogs: powerful legs, tongue etc.
Lions: fast legs, claws, powerful jaws etc.
Chameleon: color changing, tongue, eyes etc.
Assess Understanding
If lacking understanding, content is reviewed to find weak areas, and retaught
Extension Activity
Explain how an animal of your choice finds what it needs to survive.
