Assessments
Formative
Definition: Formative assessments is the process of gathering student data to monitor and adjust instruction. It is a quick way to check where your students are at with any given concept. These assessments are low steak assessments and have little to no value in student grades.
Fact or Fiction: Fact or Fiction is a quick game you can play with your students to informally assess where they are at with a given concept. Each student gets two cards: one that says "fact" and one that says "fiction. The teacher will say a statement and the students have to evaluate whether or not they agree with that statement. If they agree, they hold up the "fact" card. If they disagree, they hold up the "fiction" card. For example, if you are teaching first grade about two-dimensional shapes, your statements could be about the attributes of different shapes. The teacher might say, "A pentagon has 6 vertices." The students will have to determine if that is a true statement or false statement and hold up the corresponding card. This is a quick way to see where the students are at in this concept and take a note of the students who need more practice and any misconceptions that might be present.
Exit Tickets: Exit tickets are another example of a formative assessment a teacher can give. This can be done in many different ways: write 3 things you learned today, write a question you still have, answer the question on the board, answer the essential question for today, write down something that surprised you from our lesson today, etc.

Survey/ Pre Assessment Quiz: A survey or quiz that is given to the students with questions over a topic before instruction is given.
Performance
Definition: A performance assessment is an assessment where students are demonstrating their knowledge and skills by producing something instead of answering test/ quiz questions.

Creating a Technology Presentation: The students take what they learned and make their own presentation to showcase their knowledge. For example: If the students learned about historical figures, the students may do a project where they create a Clips video or Keynote presentation over the historical figures.
