Immune System and Diseases
Diseases
Infectious diseases
Caused by pathogens such as viruses, fungi, bacteria, protists
Viruses = flu, colds, chickenpox
Bacteria = whooping cough, ear infections
Fungi = ringworm, athlete's foot
Protists = malaria
Noninfectious diseases
Cannot pass from person to person such as in DNA from parents or environmental conditions
Genetic diseases = cystic fibosis
Heart diseases = diabetes
Genetic and environment = cancer
Diseases of the systems
Digestive system = Gallstones, Cancers
Urinary system = Kidney disease, Kidney stones
Respiratory system = Asthma, Colds, Flu
Circulatory system = Hypertension, Atherosclerosis, Anemia
Immune System
Defence system of the body that protects against pathogens
Nonspecific defence
Specific defence
Three levels how they defend
First-line defenses
stop pathogens from invading the body.
Integumentary system
= stop pathogens from entering body
= sweat kill bacteria
Respiratory system
= hairs in nose trap pathogens
= mucus and cilia traps pathogen
Digestive system
= gastric acid destroys pathogens
= mucus traps pathogens
Circulatory system
= pathogens moved to organ that destroys them
Nervous system
= respond to some pathogens by resulting in fever
Second-line defenses
destroy to pathogens that invaded body
Inflammatory response
causes an injured area to become red or swollen
Third-line defenses
specific defenses for only one type of pathogen each
known as adaptive immune system
Active immunity
Passive immunity
Diseases
An allergy
Autoimmune disease
HIV
