Title, Introductions, and Other Performance Openers
Sign language stories, especially when they are performed informally, rarely start with a title and signing poets did not always give the title for their piece before starting the poem.
When sign language poems do have titles, they usually define or describe the content of the poem.
The poems’ real meaning may be metaphorical, but the titles are literal and the audience must work to find the metaphor.
In other cases, the title gives a hint or answer to the target of a metaphor.

Signed performances often start with the poet’s hands folded low in front of their bodies and their heads lowered.

Sometimes the performer gives a brief introduction to the piece, highlighting some part of it or drawing attention to a particular metaphor.
