Major Functions of the Respiratory System
ability to breath through inhalation and exhalation
Send oxygen to major organs that need oxygen
able to get oxygen and remove CO2 from body
Sense of smell- Olfactory
protects and purify air from dust and more
Anatomy of respiratory tract
Lower Respiratory Tract- trachea, bronchial tree, lungs
Both allows Olfacation (sense of smell)
Upper Respiratory Tract- nose, nasal cavity, sinuses, pharynx,larynx

upper resp tract
Pharynx-membrane filled cavity behind mouth and connects to esophagus
Larynx- organ that lets and forms air passage to the lungs and also holds the vocal cords
nasal cavity- lined with mucous membrane and blocks dirt and dust from getting into lungs.
Lower resp tract
trachea- rings of cartilage that extends to the larynx (windpipe)
bronchi- multiple branched, passageway for air for the lungs
Lungs- gas exchange that is respiration and breathtaking
