70 year-old female moves to Colorado and experiences difficulty breathing, viral infection of the lungs (pneumonia), and fast and shallow breathing with a wet/wheezy cough.
-
Relevant Factors
-
Denver Colorado Elevation: 5,130–5,690 ft; causes decrease in partial pressure of gases which decreases O2 levels and encourages arteriole constriction and bronchodilation
-
Increased difficulty for breathing; potential damage to bronchioles due to prolonged exposure to high elevation
-
All of these factors are interrelated since her age directly ties into the reason why she got an infection to begin with; all while, the elevation causes more strain on the respiratory system allowing for it to become an easy target for the infection to spread to
Direct Cause
-
Increased elevation causes the PP to decrease, therefore O2 levels are low in both the lungs and in the blood
Bronchodilation in attempt to gain more O2 which may have caused the increased inhalation of pathogenic virus
Constricted arterioles in the lungs also causes the lack of blood to flow to other tissues, causing lymphatic system to not process the lymph in the lungs which may have contributed to the infection of pneumonia
