Causes of the Civil War
Industry vs. Farming
- In the mid-1800s, a lot of people switched from farming to industry for agriculture.
- The Southern states maintained a large farming economy.
States' Rights
- There were arguments about how much power the states vs. the federal government should have after the constitution was written.
- The south felt that the government was taking their power.
Expansion
- Southern states feared they would lose so much power that they would also lose their rights.
- Each new state became a battleground
Slavery
- The South relied on slavery for labor and work.
- The North believed slavery was wrong and evil.
Bleeding Kansas
- The first fight over slavery took place in Kansas.
- In 1854, the people of Kansas had to vote whether they wanted to be a free state or a slave state.
Abraham Lincoln
- Abraham Lincoln was a member of anti-slavery and republican parties.
- Lincoln wasn't even on the ballot for 10 states.
Succession
- Many of the southern states left the United States after Lincoln was elected.
- South Carolina was the first state to leave, and eventually, 11 states left the United States.
