Bleeding Kansas
the first "fight" over slavery took place in Kansas. they had a choice to make- become a slave state or not.
The region was flooded with supporters from both sides. it was not fays but years they fought over this. they finally became free and entered the Union.

Secession
When Lincoln was elected, many of the southern states decided they no longer wanted to be a part of the United States. They felt that they had every right to leave. they started with south carolina
eleven states would eventually leave the United States and form a new country called the Confederate States of America. Lincoln got word of this and sent troops to put an end to it.

Expansion
the westward expansion caused the "yes slaves" and "no slaves" balance to become uneven, then even again.
the south believed they would loose all their powers due to the rights that the north had. each side (the north and south) had become a battleground to one another.

Abraham Lincoln
he was elected the US president and was of the republican party. he believed strongly in anti-slavery, and was not quiet about it either.

State's rights
since the constitution there had been many arguments about states vs. federal rights. many arguments broke out between either side.
the states felt like the federal government was taking there rights to rule, away. they didn't want to be controlled by the north. slavery was their way of living.
