Breathing occurs when the contraction or relaxation of muscles around the lungs changes the total volume of air within the air passages inside the lungs.Inspiration occurs when the inspiratory muscles that is, the diaphragm and the external intercostal muscles contract.
During inhalation, the diaphragm is contracted which increases the volume of the lung cavity. During exhalation, the diaphragm is relaxed which decreases the volume of the lung cavity.Costal breathing: a mode of breathing that requires contraction of the intercostal muscles.
