Definition

Due to rapid stimulation of thyroid gland

Most common in females

Results from excessive secretion of thyroid hormone

Clinical manifestations

Weakness

Increased pulse

Increased appetite

Poor tolerance of heat

Fine tremor of hands

Assessment and diagnostic

That is soft and pulsating

Laboratory test show decreased serum TSH

Enlarged thyroid gland

Increase in radioactive iodine uptake

Giving cool baths

To replace lost body fluids give IV fluids

Monitor and maintain body temperature by

Teach patient about how medication is taken

Give well balanced small meals

Management

Most common medication methimazole (Tapazole)

Perform surgery to treat hyperthyroidism

Antithyroid medication given to reduce secretion of thyroid hormone

Before surgery patient is given proplythiouacil

Give radioactive iodine to destroy overactive thyroid cells

To reduce signs of hyperthyroidism
