"The Qualities of the Prince:" Having Absolute Control
"Therefore, a prince must not worry about the reproach of cruelty when it is a matter of keeping his subjects united and loyal." pg 45
"I say that every prince must desire to be considered merciful and not cruel;" pg 45
Even thought he Vouches for having really controlling power, like Lao-Tzu Machiavelli understands that being seen as a merciful leader will build trust in his people.
Lao-Tzu: Non-controlling leader
"The Tao never does anything, yet through it all things are done." This says that things can be resolved without the leaders input.
"The Master sees things as they are, without trying to control them. She lets them go their own way, and resides at the center of the circle." pg 26
Types Of Government
Total Domination: A destructive government
"[The] doubt of people concerning themselves and the reality of their own experiences ... renders all punishments provided by the legal system inadequate and absurd;" pg 125 if the government abuses their power to the extent that what they have done has no punishment, it should be as said in the declaration of independence, "Whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it."
Declaration of Independence: Having a laissez-faire government
"That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just power from the consent of the governed" pg 1 Basically it's the just powers the governments obtains are that from the people, the people decide what they get to do and the government checks them back
Types of People
"The Allegory of the Cave :" Conversing Issues with one another
"If they were able to converse with one another, would they not suppose that they were naming what was actually before them" This quote is an example of the author showing how the people see the government and when the government gives restrictions they follow them.
