What is the issue
what type of issue is it
Social it is a social issue in the sense that tourists entering NZ come to see the flora and fauna that is completely unique to our countryside. It is an issue on both sides as without the use of 1080 poison our native bird population will continue to decrease, bringing with it the amount of tourists seeking out these birds. On the other side if 1080 poison is used to cull predators our native bird population will increase but when the poison gets in the waterways and the mouths of untargeted animals, especially considering the inhumane death, tourist numbers will decrease as they try to void the poison.
environmental it is an environmental issue because 1080 is a poison being dropped into our native bush to protect our native animals. These are all parts of our natural environment.

pro 1080
Scientific studies find that 1080 barely kills native birds, scientific studies have only found 13 native birds in 11 years with only two tomtits dead from 1080. Stotes and rats are responsible for the deaths of 25 million native birds.
in the last 25 years there have been 3000 tests and 1080 was found in just four water sources and all were found to be well under the limit of 2 parts per billion. Although it does get dropped in waterways it is inevitable and this quota of 2 parts per billion is approved by the ministry of health.
1080 does not kill all animals. Mammals are most susceptible, birds are more tolerant, then fish and finally amphibians and insects are mostly fine.
Not getting into the food chain, not killing birds by the thousands, not poisoning or waterways. Taking a big picture view and urging viewers to look at the scientific side rather than the ethical side.
1080 can not be substituted by trapping. Whanganui N.P is too steep, Places that are 100,000,000 hectares large with steep inaccessible terrain.
