CSF
-
Arachnoid villi (arachnoid granulations extend into a blood-filled cavity at the top of the cranium and return the CSF to the blood
CSF acts as a shock absorber and will give nutrients, electrolytes and O2 to the nervous tissue as well as remove wastes
Lumbar puncture – needle inserted between two lumbar vertebrae though dura matter and subdural space
-
Bacterial Meningitis
Involves inflammatory bacterial infection of the meninges, most commonly the pia mater and arachnoid mater, rarely the dura mater
Signs and symptoms
Sudden high fever, severe meningeal inflammation, and increased white blood cells in the CSF
Inflammation causes most signs and symptoms . Swelling slows the normal flow of CSF which puts pressure on the organs
Severe nausea, vomiting, pain, drowsiness, confusion, fretfulness or irritability, stiffness of the neck
