Lord of The Flies
Civilisation
Conch - used to call meetings,
"Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man's heart"
"We've got to have rules and obey them. After all,we're not savages"
"..no longer looking at himself, but at an awesome stranger" - when Jack painted his face for the first time, this suggests the start of the loss of civilization.
Murder becomes a game for Jack, something funny - his sense of civilisation is slipping and it shows he is finding it easier and easier to kill living things
-
Savagery
-
Calling Jack "the Chief"
Contrast between start and end of story, tells the boys to keep their choir clothes when they first crashed onto island, at the end they are encouraged to wear little clothes
Contrast between when he couldn't land the strike to kill the pig near the start, and at the end when he kills animals AND people
Golding shows how dangerous it can be to blindly follow someone who takes control - as the boys follow after Jack, they become more and more savage and enjoy the thrill of killing/hunting
-
"The opaque, mad look came into his eyes again" - Jack
Simon's death
- first big slip into savagery
- despite being innocent and trying to warn the boys about danger, he was brutally murdered by mob mentality
Evil
"Roger, with a sense of delirious abandonment, leaned all his weight on the lever." - he does this knowing it will hurt, or kill, Piggy, this is the first calculated murder and he has no remorse
Roger shows violence from the very start, he picks on the littleuns by throwing stones at them
-
-
-
Mob Mentality
"There were no words, and no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws." - the boys give in to the mob mentality, and attack senselessly
Most of the boys do not recognise it is Simon until after the deed due to their crazed chanting and dancing.
Society
Golding shows how easy it is for people to gain power over others, and how they easily become victims of dictators.
Violence
Jack rules his tribe by fear and violence - he uses the beast as a way of controlling them, saying he can protect them from this threat
LOTF Context
-
He was pessimistic about the future of mankind, and believed in the innate evil of humanity
'Lord of The Flies' title is a translation of 'Beelzebub' who was thought to be the fiercest demon in Hell, perhaps Satan himself
