Biomedical model of succesful aging-Usual ageing (Normal age-related decline in physical, social & cognitive functioning) Succesful aging (Functional loss is minimized) Critique-Subjective component is missing, stigma&discrimination
PSYCHOSOCIAL MODEL OF SUCCESFUL AGING-Life satisfaction, social functioning, psychological resources
Laypersons perspective on succesful aging-scientific theorizing needs to reflect and be linked to reality to have societal impact and relevance
GOALS & STRUCTURES-Goals organize human life development. Lifespan changes & losses lead to emergence, maintence, transformation, disengagement in specific goals, Aging involves reduction in scope of goals
QUANTATIVE (physical functioning, social functioning, psychocognitive functioning) vs QUALITATIVE (well being equals succesful aging, social contacts, physical & cognitive functioning)
defining successful aging is a challenge=autorithies, criteria of assesment, societal, historical & enviormental context, personal prerequisities, prefrences, resources
SOCIETAL AND ENVIORMENTAL CONDITIONS FOR AGING SUCCESFULLY-Active Ageing Index-measures the untapped potential of older people for active and healthy ageing across countries
Dimensions of the AAI-Employment, participation in society, independent healthy and secure living, capacity and enabling enviorment for active aging
Resilience-broad array of abilites for constructively and positively adapting to risk, adversity, or some monumental negative events
Continued social functioning-high levels of ability in social role functioning, positive interactions or relationships with others, social integration & reciprocal participation in society
Psychological resources-Positive outlook and self worth, self efficacy or sense of control over life, autonomy, independence, effective coping, adapative strageties in the face of chaning circumstances
Process-oriented models of succesful aging-maximization of gains while minimazing losses=improvement, maintence, reorientation of goal & goal structures with coping when coping with major life change and loss
2 MODELS OF SUCCESFUL AGING- Model of selection optimization & compensation vs Socioemotional selectivity theory
MODELS OF SELECTION, OPTIMIZATION, COMPENSATION= ANTECEDENT CONDITIONS (life development as specialized and age graded adaptation), reduction in general reserve capacity, loses in specific funcitons
PROCESSES=Selection, optimization, compensation
OUTCOME-reduced and transformed but effective life-Recovery form, dysfunctioning, maintence and enhancement of functioning
SELECTION-ELECTIVE SELECTION=formation of goals, formation of compatible goal system, selection of goals, commitment for selected goals vs
LOSS BASED SELECTION-reduction of the goal space, reconstruction of goal hierarchy, adjustment of goal standard, serach for new goals
When things dont work so well, I pursue my most important goals first. When I no longer cant do something in my usual way, I think about what exactly is really important to me
for e.g. I concentrate all my energy on a few things, I consider what is important. Some real life examples-Rubinstein concert pianist, marathon runner (easier routes), Older driver (easier routes, only well known routes)
OPTIMIZATION concerns means for achieving desired outcomes and attaining higher levels of functioning-ATTENTION ALLOCATION, goal directed practice, investment of time & effort, acquisition of new abilites & resources, use of opporutinites, modelling succesful other individuals

SOCIOEMOTIONAL SELECTIVITY THEORY-Motivational priorities shift accross the life span as a function of future time horizons. With limited percieved time left in life, motivational priorities more on emotion regulation than information seeking
EMOTIONAL CHOICES DURING YOUTH=Behavioral set of exploration, accumulation of information in preparation for a future when these may be necessary
GOALS-expanded horizon, acquire knowledge, meet new people, take chances
GOALS DURING OLD AGE=live in the moment, know&see more clearly what is important, invest in sure things, deepen relationships, savor life
LONGEVITY=actuarial outcome of individuals to subject to the risk of death at each age expressed at age specific mortality rate. LONGEVITY is linked to COMMITMENT TO WORK, HAVING FRIENDS, POSSESING A SENSE OF MEANING & ALTRUISM
