COPD- chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder , includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema and asthma .

seasonal flu- a viral infection, there are many variations of this virus and it changes rapidly year to year which changes the severity of symptoms

asthma- used by chronically inflamed, hypersensitive bronchial passages caused by allergens
upper respiratory tract
nose- provides an entrance for air in which air is filtered by coarse hairs inside the nostrils. Air enters nose through external nares nostrils
para nasal sinuses- air-filled spaces within the maxillary, frontal, ethmoid, and sphenoid bones of the skull. They open to the nasal cavity and are lined with mucus membrane that is continuous with that lining nasal cavity
pharynx (throat)- a common passageway for air and food. Have three subdivisions ; nasopharynx, oropharynx, laryngopharynx.
Larynx- an enlargement in the airway superior to the trachea and inferior to the pharynx, helps keep particles from entering the trachea. House of vocal cords.

lower respiratory tract
Trachea ( windpipe)- the inner wall of the trachea is lined with cilliated mucous membrane to trap incoming particles, beat continuously in opposite direction of incoming air. Expel mucus loaded with dust and other debris away from lungs
Bronchial tree- begins with the two main (primary) bronchi , each leading to lung enters the lung at hilus. right bronchus is wider , shorter and straighter than left

breathing mechanism
Breathing is the action of ; inhaling and exhaling air and is due to changes in pressure with the thorax. Also known as external respiration and is created due to the muscles of the chest and the diaphragm changing the size of the chest cavity.
