Gas Tests
Carbon Dioxide Test
-
Uses of CO2
: fire extinguishers, fizzy drinks
-
-
Oxygen Test
Oxygen supports combustion so a good method of testing for oxygen is to take a glowing splint and place it in a sample of gas, if it re-ignites the gas is oxygen
-
-
-
Test for anions
SULFATE :
- Add approximately 3 cm3 of sodium sulfate solution to the test-tube
- Add a few drops of hydrochloric acid
- Add barium chloride solution drop-by-drop
HALIDES
-
Bromide- milky, cloudy ( creamy )
-
-
-
If Bromide just change Cl to Br, everything stays the same
-
-
Carbonate test
LIMEWATER TEST
when CO2 is present, limewater turns cloudy/white
Flame tests
Instructions
- Dip the nichrome wire loop into dilute hydrochloric acid and place in blue (non-luminous) Bunsen flame to clean it
- Dip it into the HCl again and then the compound you are going to test

Testing for Water
Water Crystallisation ( white anhydrous copper sulphate turns blue when water is added )
CuSO4 (s) + 5H2O ======> CuSO4 . 5 H2O (s)
white ( dehydrated copper sulphate )
blue ( hydrated copper sulphate )

boil water to see if water is pure ( boiling point of pure water is 100 Celcius. Freezing point of pure water is 0 Celcius
Salty water had a higher BP and a lower FP
