Organs of the respiratory system and location (upper and lower respiratory track)
Larynx-The larynx is essential to human speech.
Pulmonary Alveolus-An alveolar duct is a tube composed of smooth muscle and connective tissue, which opens into a cluster of alveoli.
Pharynx-The pharynx also plays a role in speech.
Bronchus-The bronchi branch from the trachea into each lung and create the network of intricate passages that supply the lungs with air.
Lung-The bronchi branch from the trachea into each lung and create the network of intricate passages that supply the lungs with air.
Trachea-located just below the larynx.
Breathing mechanism
Bronchioles
Diaphragm
Bronchi
External Intercostal Muscles
Anatomy of the respiratory tract
Upper Respiratory Tract-nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx
Lower Respiratory Tract-trachea, primary bronchi, lungs
Differences between the right and left lung and right and left primary bronchi
The right lung is shorter because the liver sits high, it has 3 lobes and the left lung has 2 lobes, and is longer.
The right primary bronchi is wider and the left primary bronchi is thinner and larger.
Internal and external respiration
External respiration- refers to the process of exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide in the lungs, gills, or other tissues exposed to the external environment.
Internal Respiration- is the process of diffusing oxygen from the blood, into the interstitial fluid and into the cells.
Definitions of lung capacity terminology
Air in the lungs is measured in terms of lung volumes and lung capacities. Volume measures the amount of air for one function and capacity is any two or more volumes.
