Block the action of DPP-4, an enzyme which destroys a group of gastrointestinal hormones called incretins.
May be used as a second or third line medication for people with type 2 diabetes after prescribing metformin and sulphonylureas.
May be prescribed as an alternative to thiazolidinedione medication.
Contraindications
History of serious hypersensitivity reaction to DPP-4 inhibitors.
Dosage
Nephroprotective effects beyond the reduced renal risk conferred by glycemic control.
DPP-4 inhibitors have beneficial renal effects mainly by reducing the risk of development or progression of albuminuria compared with placebo or other antidiabetic agents.
ALOGLIPTIN: 25mg once daily, may take without regard to food.
SAXAGLIPTIN : Take 2.5mg to 5mg maximum is 5mg, take without regard to food.
LINAGLIPTIN: 5mg once daily, take with or without meals.
