Defination
Metformin is a drug under biguanide group that is used for initial therapy in most patients with diabetes type II.
Indications
Used in type II diabetes
Restores the body's response to insulin you naturally produce.
Used with proper diet and exercise programme to control and possibly with other medications to control high blood sugar
Decreases amount of sugar that your liver makes and that your intestines or stomach or intestines absorb.
Storage
Keep this medication in a container it came with, tightly closed
Keep out of reach of children
Store it at room temperature and away from light, heat and moisture.
Side effects
Asthesia
Diarrhoea
Flatulence
Myalagia
Hypoglacemia
Upper respiratory tract infection
Abdominal pain
Mechanism of action
Stimulate uptake of glucose into the muscle.
Inhibit gluconeogenesis
Decreases glucose absorption from the gastrointestinal tract.
Reduce glucose release from the liver
Inhibit low density lipo-proteins therefore reducing danger or atheroma some patients.
Route
Take by mouth as directed by your doctor, 1-3 times a day with meals.
Contraindications
Abnormal creatinine clearance resulting from shock
Diabetes ketonacidosis
Metabolic acidosis with or without coma
Chronic heart failure
Severe renal disease
Hyper- sensitivity
Septicemia or myocardial infection
Lactation
