METFORMIN
Mechanism of action
It stimulates the uptake of glucose into muscles
It inhibits gluconeogonis
It reduces glucose absorption from the gastrointestinal tract
Reduce glucose release from the liver
Definition
This is a drug that is prescribed for treating type 2 diabetes
It belongs to a group called bignarides
Clinical use
It is used combined with insulin in patients with insulin dependent diabetic meliitus.
It is used combined with one of sulphonylureas when the patient is not responding.
Adverse effects
Long term use may interfere with vitamin B 12 absorption
It can cause lactic acidosis
Transiet gastrointesinal disturbances

Maximum dose is 2550 mg per day
