Prandial glucose regulators
Mechanism of action
Nateglinide synergize with metformin increases the affect of given dose of metformin.
Repaglinide stimulates insulin release from the pancreas in the same way the oral sulphonylureas do but its does not promote insulin release in the absence of glucose.
Nateglinide works by restoring early phase insulin release both drugs are quickly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and both are very short acting.
Side effects
Vomiting and shock
Anorexia and nausea
Abdominal pain
Drug interactions
Decreased excretion with drugs that acidify urine
Indictions
Stimulate insulin release from the pancreas
Treat people with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Nursing Consideration
Assess baseline pulse and blood pressure to monitor effects of altered glucose levels.
Assess body systems for changes suggesting possible complications associated with poor blood glucose control.
Investigate nutritional intake, noting any problems with intake and adherence to prescribed diet, to help prevent adverse reactions to drug therapy.
