Social Media Manipulation
Research
My own research
Definition
manipulation
Manipulation is a way to covertly influence someone with indirect, deceptive, or abusive tactics. Manipulation may seem benign or even friendly or flattering, as if the person has your highest concern in mind, but in reality it's to achieve an ulterior motive.
Media Maipulation
Media manipulation is a series of related techniques in which partisans create an image or argument that favours their particular interests
Social Media
websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.
Inappropriate pictures
Pictures that are uncomfortable to see, posted without consent and often displaying blood, pictures of bikinis etc.
Dangers
Once an image is shared, it can be copied and saved by others, shared with people the sender does not know and posted on social media and public websites.
Images can be extremely difficult to remove and the consequences can follow a young person into adulthood.
Ages Targeted
In a 2017 eSafety survey, 9 out of 10 young people aged 14 to 17 thought that sexting happened among their peers — as a kind of courtship behaviour.
Results
1 in 3 said they had actually experienced sexting in some way — whether sending, receiving, asking, being asked, sharing or showing nude or nearly nude pictures.
5% said they had sent an intimate image, and 19% of these said they did it because they trusted the person they sent it to.
15% reported being asked for an image, with 52% of requests coming from someone they did not know.
73% said they did not send an image after being asked (82% of 14 year olds compared to 66% of 17 year olds).
Survey
Most teens think that trends (ex. vsco girls) should not be encouraged, while others think that they are fine, as long as they do not encourage bullying or bad habits.
Most teens, if asked to send inappropriate pics, would block and report the person asking them to send pictures.
Most teens think that Social Media, on a scale of 1-5, is "3", while some think it is "2" or "4"
Most teens are not victims (who answered) are not victims of peer pressure.
Most teens agree that people should not enhance their physical features on social media, and some thought that it was okay, as long as it is indicated as photoshop.
More teens would share personal information to people who they trust, than teens who wouldn't send it to anyone.
Most teens would reason with someone who acts inappropriately on social medias, report it, delete their account, or tell them to stop.
Teens say that social media manipulation is bad, as it: Targets, misleads and misinforms people, or makes them do rash things.
