Diagnostic
Definition: A diagnostic assessment is a type of pre-assessment that teachers can you to guide instruction.
Surveys: Surveys can be given to students before a lesson or unit so that teachers can gather an understanding of what students know and do not know.
KWL Charts: KWL Charts can be given to students at the beginning of a unit or lesson so that teachers can guide instructions based on what students know, what they want to know, and what they have learned.
Formative
Definition: A formative assessment is when a teacher assesses students throughout the learning process to modify and adjust instruction based on understandings and misconceptions at the beginning and during a unit. This type of assessment is very informal and is considered low stakes.
Pre-Assessments: Students are given a pre-assessment before the start of a new unit so that the teacher can teach according to what the student know and do not know.
Homework: Students are given homework to show teachers what content they have learned. Teacher's can use homework to adjust instruction based on student misconceptions.
Summative
Definition: A summative assessment is when a teacher assesses students at the end of the learning process or unit. This type of assessment is more formal and is considered high stakes.
Portfolios: A portfolio is a collection of student work that show what students have learned and accomplished over a period of time.
End-of-Unit Tests: End-of-Unit Tests are taken at the end of a unit to assess what students have learned over that period of time.
Performance
Definition: A performance assessment is an assessment that requires students to perform an activity or test to display their knowledge.

Mind Maps: Students can create a map tracking the knowledge that they have learned as a way of displaying their understandings over certain topics.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/benchmarks are used for teachers to see if their students are learning and comprehending what is taught and whether or not they are on track for grade level.
STAAR: A standardized test for the state of Texas that is administered to students across the state to ensure that they are learning the content needed for certain grade levels starting in third grade.
MAP: An assessment that is given to students periodically throughout the school year so that teachers can see if they are on track for grade level.
