Definition
A systemic skeletal disease characterised by low bone mass and a microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue, with a consequent increased bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture
Defined as bone mineral density MORE than 2.5 standard deviations BELOW the young adult mean (T score <2.5)

Diagnosis

Bloods
Ca, phosphate and alkaline phosphate are all normal

Pathophysiology
Osteoporosis resulting from increased bone breakdown by osteoclasts and decreased bone formation by osteoblasts, leading to loss of bone mass
