Memory & Storage
-
ROM (Read Only Memory)
Data that includes BIOS (Basic Input Output System) and MAC addresses. It cannot be changed/overwritten or removed and it is non volatile which means the data is kept when the computer is turned off.
Virtual Memory
When the RAM is full, part of secondary storage is used to increase the amount of memory available to CPU. It is slower than RAM as data has to travel further distances to get to the CPU.
Flash Memory
Non volatile so like ROM but is like a much slower version of RAM so cant be used instead. Used in secondary storage.
Secondary Storage
Magnetic Storage
Uses electromagnetic to read and write data from platters. They store 1TB generally and they have fast read and write speeds/durable and are relatively cheap. However, not portable and susceptible to knocks.
Optical Storage
Lights from lasers read and write data on discs. There are different types for example a CD can store 700MB whereas a DVD can store 4.7GB and a Blu-Ray stores 128GB. It is good because it is cheap and portable however it is not very durable as it is easily scratched and it has slow read and write speeds.
Solid State Storage
Stored electrically using flash memory and can store up to 4TB of data. It includes SD/USB/Flash drives. It has fast read and write speeds, very durable & portable. it doesn't have any noise as there isn't any moving parts. On the other hand, it is the most expensive.
