5.5 Protecting and Restoring Terrestrial Habitats
Protected Areas
Not enough # of protected areas
undisturbed by humans because of federal laws
These areas allow for the identification and protection of species vulnerable to extinction or high amounts of dmg
Biodiversity hotspots
Corridors and buffer zones help protect animals
Ecosystem Restoration
Would help rehabilitate damaged areas
Promotes reintroduction of local species to destroyed habitats
Prevent disappearance of plant/animal species
Protecting Forests
Sustainable Forestry
Selective and strip cutting are sustainable, while clear cutting is not.
Don't suppress small forest fires since these are essential to avoiding large ones.
Cutting down certain parts of a forest to avoid fire to spread, since it is highly unlikely it will spread over a clear spot in a forest.
Tree Plantations
Not very good, since they are monocultures that do not promote biodiversity
Trees are clear-cut as soon as they become valuable
They are usually grown on land used/created by primary and 2nd growth forests.
