Marley's ghost
-
Before Marley's ghost appears a very
dark and sinister tone is created through
the use of Dickens language.
The quote "double locked which was not
his custom" which shows he is very paranoid
and is acting out of character
"In life my spirit never roved beyond our
counting house" a warning message to
Scrooge that there is more to life than
money and that he needs to change his ways
-
When Scrooge first sees the ghost
he is very scared and wants it to go away.
However, by the end Scrooge is thankful
as he realises that he needs to change
to live a happier life.
Ghost of Christmas Past
-
One of the examples is Scrooge as a young employee at fezziwig's christmas gathering. This is one of the first time Scrooge shows a glimpse of happiness throughout the text and the quote "Fezziwig!God bless him" shows that he enjoyed working under him.
-
Scrooge becomes very uneasy during the visit from this ghost and is affected by his past experiences.
The ghost shows a number of past experiences that seem to unsettle Scrooge. One example is Belle all grown up with a family and children. Scrooge replies with "remove me from this spirit" as he realises it could have been him having a family with Belle. However, instead he is living an solitary and lonely life.
Christmas yet to come
-
Shows the image of tiny Tim dying and the grief that it brings Bob Cratchitt and his family, which fuels Scrooge's change as he realises that he has the money to help the Cratchitt family.
This ghost is described as a phantom wearing a "black deep garment" which creates a very dark and sinister tone and intimidates Scrooge.
The quote "Ghost of future! I fear you more than
any other spectre i have seen" demonstrates fear and a sense of desperation from Scrooge towards the ghost.
Shows Scrooge an image of no-one turning up to his funeral which makes him very upset and wants his fate to be reversed by the phantom.
