IMPROVISATION
The Do's :check:
Establish context (who, what, where): When playing games like freeze and starting a scene, always give enough details for the other actors to have an idea of what is happening.
Show, don't tell: Show what is happening by acting and demonstrating, don say what you are doing.
-
YES AND: Always accept information given by other actors and add relevant information that connects to the scene.
No mistakes: If you make what you think is a mistake, don't show it, just go along with the scene.
Help your fellow actor(s): If you notice that your partner is out of ideas and is struggling, help them by saying something that will make the scene flow.
Do Something! :warning:
Always do something: Even if you have break a rule such as asking a question, it is always best to do anything and not stay quiet.
-
-
Don't choose an emotional state beforehand: In improv, you don't know what to expect, so you must be ready to become any character and show any emotion and/or situation
Have backup characters:Although you must try to be original, always have various characters that you can always break into if you can't think of anything else.
-
-
-
-
Be changeable: When creating characters, choose different moods, personalities, experiences, and backgrounds to make the scenes and characters original
Be present: Focus on what is happening and don't get distracted. Always be aware of your surroundings and of what your fellow actor is saying so that you can respond with relevant information.
The second law of thermodynamics: When the light hits, you can't pause or go back, you are on and you must do something to create action.
-
The Don'ts :forbidden:
-
-
-
Don't use objects/props Make up props, don't use real objects because if you do, you are stuck with that object for the rest of the scene, and you can't ignore it.
Don't do teaching scenes: Don't do scenes in which one actor has more authority than the rest and the ideas only come from one person.
Don't talk about past or future events: If you talk about past or future events, other actors will not be familiar with them, so they will not be able to add to the scene.
Don't dictate action: Don't say what you are doing, just do it and show it by acting and giving enough details.
Don't try to be funny: Funny comes natural, don't try to do it on purpose
