BU ArchMat meeting - 14th Feb 2020
X-ray room
New lockable cabinet for pXRFs
Get rid of sink
Repair ceiling and remove dumped stuff
Get a normal desk you can put legs under to replace sink
Comfy chair with back for support
Get rid of relic radioactive sources in cabinet
Temporary room for pXRF during room repairs
Repairs likely in Summer or perhaps Easter
Temp room needs controlled access either with cards or acknowledged in risk assessments
SEM
Harry and Derek will be trained up and responsible for further training
Needs to get ready for use by Heather and others
Thin-sections
UV resin still awaiting capital bid
Dan uses cheap Chinese resin successfully as glue
Damien wants us to try his quick setting resin first
Buehler saw still waiting for engineer to visit
Possibility of contracting a local engineering firm for repair
Parts must still be bought from Buehler
Petrothin a distant dream
Future directions of group
Get more people using analytical equipment
Integrate analytical elements into undergraduate and masters more effectively
Perhaps have an analytical day of arch materials, similar to the handling day
Perhaps have seminars after certain lectures, where a group of students watch the SEM or pXRf being used, as at UCL?
Demonstrate potential of commercial thin-section production at BU
Can this compete with UCL and Soton given their equipment, experience and setup?
Permanent positions and more equipment funding won't be forthcoming until this potential has been demonstrated
Limestone standard bid ongoing
