Verification Principle
Verification principle = the belief that statements are only meaningful if they can be verified by senses.
Verificationists argued that religious language is meaningless as the statements cannot be verified empirically
-
The Vienna Circle were a group of philosophers, who met in the 1920s and 1930s.
They argued that some statements were meaningful whilst others were not. They came up with the 'verification principle' to help distinguish between the two.
-
However, the verification principle also seems to rule out several things that can't be verified
This includes; historical events, scientific laws, and claims about art and beauty
Ayer's verificationsim
Ayer accepted the basic idea behind the verification principle, agreeing with Hume and the Vienna Circle on rejecting metaphysics.
He argued that for a statement to be meaningful, it should either be a tautology, or something that is verified by principle.
