New African States
Asante kingdom:
The kingdom emerged in the area occupied by present-day Ghana.
Osei Tutu:
A military leader who won control of the trading city of Kumasi. From there he began conquering neighboring peoples and unified the Asante Kingdom.
Monopoly:
The exclusive control of a business or industry.
Oyo Empire:
The empire arose from successive waves of settlement by the Yoruba people of present day Nigeria. The leaders used wealth from the slave trade to build up and impressive army. Using this army the Oyo empire conquered the neighboring kingdom of Dahomey.

The ruler of Kongo in west-central Africa. Was tutored by Portuguese missionaries. Hoping to convert Africans to Christianity.

Large estates run by an owner or an owner's overseer in the Americas and elsewhere. Rich Europeans also bought slaves as exotic household servants.
Missionaries:
A person sent on a religious mission, especially one sent to promote Christianity in a foreign country. These people were sent to Africa to promote the Christian faith.
