Improvisation!
Don'ts of Improv
Don't Deny
This is one of the most ESSENTIAL rules of improv. Always add on to your fellow actors ideas, don't reject them.
Don't Ask Questions
This doesn't apply to every question, but more directly addresses questions that reveal too much about a character such as "Who are you?", or "What are you doing here?"
Don't Use Props
Props generally only have one or two purposes in the real world. Having a prop in an improv scene limits where it can go.
Don't Do Teaching Scenes
Teaching scenes involve directing other actors, which limits their creativity and the potential.
-
Don't Dictate Action
Dictating action like during a scene like: "I am going to talk to my friend". Is distracting and unnatural. It is best to avoid it.
Improv Success and Tips
-
-
Anything an actor says is valid from their perspective. Other actors must respect this and accept common "truths" within the scene.
Don't talk TOO much!
Talking too much is not helpful to facilitate a scene that works. It is generally better to balance speaking time with others in the scene.
-
Do's of Improv
Establish, the 4 W's Who, what, when, where.
These important details should be established early on in the scene so that the audience isn't left wondering what is going on. It will also help you as the actors to flow with the scene better.
-
Show, don't tell.
Talking is only part of acting. Make sure to use your body to act out the scene as well and to support your speech.
This also means that you should use strong details and develop your character well so that part of your scene explains itself rather than you having to dictate action. Develop interesting characters and use sincere emotions.
Yes, and... (always offer and add on)
This is one of the most basic rules of improv. Always say yes to your partner's suggestion and add something on to continue with the flow of the scene.
Don't force funny, it ends up not being as funny because the audience can tell that it is forced.
-
Always DO SOMETHING!
Don't hesitate to try, even if you think it's wrong.
Improv isn't about always being perfect. it is about trying new things and being spontaneous. Don't preoccupy yourself with doing the "wrong" thing.
Be brave. Step out of your comfort zone, it can be very rewarding. And the more you try, the better you will get!
-
-
-
Be adaptable.
Don't be afraid to change characters or change the emotion of your character. Part of improv is having the skill of flexibility at your disposal.
Be present, always focus on the scene.
Focus is integral. If you are not focused, it will show and the scene won't flow.
Exercises to Try at Home
Writing stories on the spot with details. This exercise helps one to develop their on the spot thinking skills as well as their creativity skills.
