Formative
Definition: Formative assessments gather evidence of student learning and help teachers see what they need to adjust in their lessons to help student achievement.
Example: Exit Tickets Students complete an exit ticket based off of what the lesson was over so the teacher can monitor student growth and achievement.
Example: Questioning: An informal example of a formative assessment is when the teacher uses question to gauge if the students are understanding the content.

Example: Group Presentations Group presentations require students to use the knowledge they have learned in class and make a presentation about it.
Example: Projects Projects are a good alternative to the traditional pencil and paper tests. Projects can assess what students have learned in class and are more engaging for students.

Interim/Benchmark
Example: MAP Some schools use MAP testing to asses if students are on track for their grade level for the beginning, middle, and end of year. The MAP test helps teachers see where students need extra help.
Example: STAAR The STAAR test is the Texas Standardized test that assess students' knowledge in their grade level.
Definition: Benchmarks are used to see if students are where they are supposed to be in their learning.
Summative
Example: End of Unit Exams End of unit exams or final exams take what the student should have learned and put it into a high-stake test.
Example: Standardized Testing Standardized or state testing takes what the student has learned the whole year and puts it into a big exam. This exam is to see if the students mastered achievement.

Definition: Diagnostic assessments are pre-assessments that determine any strengths or student misconceptions that the teacher will need to address.
