Formative
Definition:
Formative assessments allow the teacher to form future instruction. Formative assessments are low stakes (low or no points) and are used to monitor student learning.
Think-Pair-Share: This activity allows all students to communicate their prior and current knowledge. The teacher is able to monitor conversations and identify what students already know and what they may not know yet.
Exit Tickets: An exit ticket allows the teacher to see what concepts students are understanding and/or struggling with from the day. This allows the teacher to reteach or move on in a quick and easy way.
Summative
Definition:
A summative assessment "sums" up student learning at the end of a unit. These are usually high stakes and worth more points.

Unit Assessments: A district-wide assessment scoring students based on what they have learned. These assessments occur at the end of each unit and test students over the standards they should have acquired.
Performance
Definition:
A piece of work students are asked to do to show how well they apply their knowledge, skills, or abilities.
Presentations: A presentation allows the student to be creative when making something to show to the class. This project allows the student to apply knowledge in a way so that others can understand. The presentation could present information, teach a concepts, and much more.
Experiments: A scientific experiment allows students to show their knowledge of scientific concepts and carry out the scientific processes.
Diagnostic
Pre-Assessment: A pre-assessment allows the teacher to see what skills students have already mastered, what they already know, and what they do not know yet. This is a great way to begin a new unit or topic to ensure you are meeting the students' needs.
Definition:
A diagnostic assessment is given at the beginning of a course, grade level, and/or unit. These assessments test students based on what they already know in order to determine the students' level of knowledge, skills, and understandings. This allows the teacher to adjust instruction based on student needs.
Where-to-Start Word Test:
This diagnostic assessment allows the teacher to see which words students can and cannot read, allowing the teacher to know what reading level to begin individual students at.
