Autotrophs obtain energy and nutrients by harnessing sunlight through photosynthesis (Autotrophs do not consume other organisms; they are, however, consumed by heterotrophs.
A few autotrophs in the Sahara are the doum palm tree, lovegrass, wild desert gourd, and the peyote cactus.
At each trophic level the amount of energy decreases as it travels through an ecosystem. At any trophic level as little as 10 per cent of the energy is transferred to the next level. The remainder is largely lost in metabolic processes as heat.
An ecosystem is a community of living organisms in conjunction with the nonliving components of their environment, interacting as a system.
