Intro to muscle
-
Muscle:
- converts biochemical reactions -> mechanical work
- generates force + motion
- also generates heat for homeostasis
skeletal:
attached to bones via tendons (composed of collagen), only contracts in response to somatic signal and is made up of striated muscle
structure of skeletal muscle:
- epimysium (-over): outer connective tissue
- fascicle: bundle of muscle fibres
- perimysium (-around): outside of fascicle
- muscle fibres (cell): made up of myofibrils
- endomysium (-inside): outside of muscle fibre
structure of muscle fibre:
- several nuclei
- sarcoplasm: cytoplasm
- sarcolemma (-sheath): cell membrane
- extension of sarcolemma is t/transverse (-extending)-tublues and allows for rapid action potential diffusion
- sarcoplasmic reticulum: endoplasmic reticulum (involved in protein/lipid synthesis)
- enlarged areas of the sarcoplasmic reticulum is the terminal cisternae which store Ca2+
