Assessment for tracking student learning: Students answer an open-ended writing prompt about the current class topic while using the targeted vocabulary.
Pre-reading activity: Students predict what will happen in the reading in advanced based on the story title.
Students read the textbook short story individually. Then, they meet up with other advanced students to discuss their opinions of the story and answer questions about the story.
Post-reading activity: Students write about what they would do differently if they were the character in the story.
Students take turns reading the textbook short story aloud in small groups where their peers can help with pronunciation of new words. Then, students underline words they don’t understand and take turns discussing story comprehension together. Finally, students try answering the post-story comprehension questions together.
Students review vocabulary by playing a team game.
The game can be a word board game, Pictionary, Taboo, etc.
Strategy 1) For writing, the students will write their ideas in Korean initially and the Korean co-teacher will help them translate word by word into English at their own pace. The teacher will write example sentences with markings / coloring for different parts of the sentence to help with transitioning from Korean word order (Subject-Object-Verb) to English (Subject- Verb-Object).
Strategy 2) For word tests, the students will practice with visual note cards (picture glued on front side and English word with Korean translation on the back). The students will have a chart of Korean to English alphabet as reference to help reinforce spelling.
Strategy 3) For reading short stories there will be an emphasis on pre-reading activities that use pictures to understand the theme and answer who, what, when, where, and why questions.
Strategy 1) Survey the students and find out their graded reading level. Students practice their reading individually and build vocabulary with graded reading books and graded news articles from the website “Breaking News English”. Follow-up reading comprehension worksheets will be given for their assigned reading.
Strategy 2) A struggling student can be paired with a higher performing student who can act as their tutor.
