The development gap
Political
Conflict >> drains a country of important resources as well as destroying important infrastructure such as hospitals and schools
Ongoing conflict can reduce citizens' safety and thus inhibit their ability to safely attend work. Conflict can also mean that aid organisations are unable to provide resources to those in need.
Conflict can affect a country's economic state greatly so that it cannot afford to fairly pay its workers (case study of Yemen, public servants not being paid by the government during the Yemeni civil war)
Political corruption may mean that people are not paid fairly, thus inhibiting their ability to make an income
Countries with dictatorships commonly experience political instability and rebellions/coups against the party in charge. This can cause higher rates of violence and social tension, impacting citizens' safety.
Political instability can make places unsafe for tourists, meaning their economy is impacted as it is not receiving the benefits of revenue from tourism.
Political instability or conflict with other countries may make it more difficult for a country to receive foreign aid from other countries.
Economic
Reliance on primary products >> Although primary products can help to grow a country's economy in development if a country is reliant on the primary products it can lead to economic instability.
As primary products are goods available from the cultivation of raw goods (without manufacturing them). As these are natural resources they are vulnerable to natural disasters, disease and weather conditions. Natural resources are also finite and will eventually run out leaving nothing to support the economy.
