Development
Social
Conflict - if a country is experiencing conflict then it may not be able to provide sufficient food and clean water for every one of its residents. This impacts the HDI of the country.
Population growth - If a country is decling in population is shows development as people have more access to contraception and people are less likely to have more children to help them make money.
This graph shows the population of Australia. Instead of a pyramid shape the graph shows a declining population as there are more middle-aged people and children.
This graph shows the population of Burkina Faso. This graph has a pyramid shape which shows an increasing population as the highest percent of the population is a young child. It also shows that people are dying faster than in developed countries.
Infant mortality rate - The lower the infant mortality rate the more developed a country is as developed countries are able to provide more support to the mother and there are more medical facilities and professionals to look after the health of the baby.
Life Expectancy - developed countries have a higher life expectancy as they are able to afford safer living conditions, more healthy food and have much easier access to medical facilities and health professionals.
Adult Literacy rates - developed countries have a higher percentage of the country that are able to read and write as it indicates that these people were able to attend school for a longer period of time.
School Attendance - poorer countries may not be able to invest in education. Children may also have to drop out of school in order to help provide for their families.
Nutrition - Countries with a higher nutrition rate are more likely to be developed as these countries are able to afford more healthy food which can often be expensive. They are also able to afford to see a dietician if they have individual needs.
Environmental
Climate - unreliable climate can lead to droughts, floods, and other natural disasters. These can affect the crops and health of residents.
Natural Resources - countries with reserves of oil, minerals and gas can improve their level of development.
Air Quality - Countries with a better air quality are more likely to be developed as they are able to outsource their 'factory work' and afford to have higher restrictions on carbon emissions.
Response to Natural Disasters - countries that are quick to respond to natural disasters and have a lower death toll are more likely to be developed as they can afford better infastrucuture to better withstand natural disasters and have more money to afford to react quickly with a lot of medical support.
Natural disasters - an abundance of natural disasters can destroy cities, crops, homes, and take the lives of people. Countries may have to spend a lot of money to rebuild, meaning that they cannot trade during this period.
Political
Level of democracy/corruption - corrupt governments do not lead to a developed country. Money and other resources that could be use to improve the level of development might be used for other things (e.g. spending money on one group of affluent people rather than helping the general public).
-
Dictatorship - Countries with more than one party are more likely to be developed as the people will vote for the party that they think will better the economy and dictatorship won't exist where one person keeps most of the country's money and so they are unable to better the living conditions in the country.
Level of human rights - Countries with a high standard of human rights are more likely to be developed as they are more likely to have a democracy and so people can vote for the party that they believe will attend to their needs.
Economic
Unemployment rates - If a large percentage of the population is unemployed then these people will be unable to afford safe living conditions, food and other neccesities.
GNI per capita - If a country is able to have a high amount of profit then the government is more likely to be able to provide the public with financial support and facilities to benefit the public (including schools and hospitals).
Trade - more developed countries control the trade system, and this means that they benefit from trade the most. Such countries have a high GNI per capita, and thus can improve the lives of their people.
