MARSHALL PLAN-INTRODUCED IN 1947, PERMITTED IN 1948
Introduced by George Marshall after visiting Europe and viewing how severely capitalist countries where coping, it was The Truman doctrine in practice where the USA would give $17 billion to struggling capitalist countries who were exposed to the threat of communist take over. The funds would therefore stimulate European economy and therefore prevent communism growth. It was passed through congress when in 1948, Czechoslovakia turned communist as it provided evidence of how communism was growing.
EFFECTS of the plan and terms
- Medicine, financial support, materials and machinery were provided.
- The USA stock market improved as the countries where only able to buy/trade from USA market. This therefore helped both the European and American economy and therefore make communism look less 'attractive' and thus further carry out the TD, stop communism from growing.
- It was used as a propaganda tool as made the USA be pericied as a powerful country and therefore help convince contries to remain capitalist/switch to capitalism.
- It also promoted unity in Europe and therefore stop the growth of communism.
- the Marshall plan showed how the USA were prepared to take physical action to prevent communism as well as become involved in European concerns.
- It also further defined the line of the Iron curtain as it showed those who declined the Marshall plan were those firmly behind the curtain.
- Overall however, it supplied the stimulation for economical recovery for Europe, as well boosting USA economy as well as providing the support for overall better quality life for the citizens for the countries.
COMINFORM- 1947
Organisation created by Stalin, it was the official response to the declaration of the Truman doctrine. In addition, it had ambitions to:
- create unity to communist countries behind the iron curtain
- as they met regularly in Moscow, it allowed Stalin to ensure all the leaders where following the same policies and all had the same passion for communism.
COMECON- 1949
Stalin made it clear that the countries behind the iron curtain were enable to accept Marshall aid. Instead he created a substitute with the aim to bring economical success to Eastern European countries following his rule. It did not involve one leading successful country but instead worked on the basis of of the countries working together to share knowledge and resources, to benefit all included.
