Peer-To-Peer
Peer-to-Peer is a direct connection between two or more Nodes over the WWW, without either Node directly connecting to the connection point on the other side.

A local area network usually consists of a singular connection point with multiple nodes connected to it.
-
WAN
-
A wide area network usually consists of multiple connection points, joint together like a web, hence the name "World Wide Web".
Their individual nodes usually cannot be accessed outside of the individual connection point but each connection point can be accessed by itself.
