- seriality - total RT = sum of all stage durations
if experimental manipulations affect different stages, they should independently affect total RT - no interaction
if there is interaction, two factors affect a stage in common

- information is being processed in successive functional stages. in each stage input is transformed and output passed on to the next stage
- experimental manipulation should affect duration of (one of) the processes involved but not the quality of the output
