Mice and humans share 85% of their DNA, while chimpanzees and humans share 96% of their DNA.
The differences in species are often quite obvious to spot. It's interesting that much of our genetic differences result in external and cognitive differences, whereas much of our genetic similarity results in internal physiological similarity.
One of Kandel's earliest and most important findings was the discovery that creation of a long-term memory results in changing the neurological structure of the brain through synaptic growth and the formation of new synapses between the neurons involved in the long-term memory.
This finding was significant because it enhanced scientific understanding of neuroplasticity, neural networks and the brain as more pliable than previously believed.
