Copyright, trademarks, intellectual property
Copyright -- Protects peoples work including : filmmakers, game designers, authors and composers. Wears off after 70 years of creators death making it a public domain.
Trademarks -- Identifies an organisation or product. Their use is protected by law e.g. logo
Intellectual Property -- Ideas, inventions and pieces of work which at some point may be copyrighted or trademarked . Idea phase
Royalty Free -- Can be used without needing to pay royalties. Rules of copyright still apply
Other Legal Issues
Defamation -- Damage to someones reputation such as slander or libel
Slander -- To make false verbal statements that may damage someones reputation
Libel -- To make false statements in writing that damages a persons reputation
Privacy -- Covered by EU convention of human rights "a right to respect for private and family life"
Health and Safety
Recce -- Checking a location for suitability Hazard Identification then Hazard characteristics then Exposure assessment then Risk characteristics
Risk assessments -- Identifying hazards and deciding who and how they could be harmed and find ways to solve this
Safe working practices -- Working with electricity, Lifting heavy equipment, using computers, working at a height
Certification and classification
Censorship -- Artist / filmmakers are not allowed to show their full work
Certification -- Informs the audience on the suitability of the content. Important when thinking about target audience
Classification -- Factors that affect classification according to age ratings include: violence, strong language and scenes of sexual nature
Data protection
Data protection Act: Fair and lawful use, limited processes, no excess just relevant information, Accurate, not held longer than needed, processed in line with rights, Secure, Not transferred to other countries.
