later life
Emperor Joseph II appointed Mozart as his "chamber composer" in December 1787, required Mozart to compose dances for annual balls
In late 1780s Mozart was struggling with debt and moved his family from Vienna to the suburbs in Alsergrund. During this time he wrote his last three symphonies and the last of the three Da Ponte operas, Cosi Fan Tutte, premiering in 1790.
He travelled from Vienna to Leipzig, Berlin, and Frankfurt, and other German cities trying to revive his success but failed to. In 1788 - 1789 it was Mozarts lowest point, suffering from depression and "black thoughts"
1790 -1791 he went through personal healing and a period of music productivity. The opera The Magic Flute, the final piano concerto in B-flat, the Clarinet Concerto in A major, and the unfinished Requiem and others were written during this time, these were his most admired works.
