Climate Factor
Air Masses and Wind
All Warm air comes from the equator. All Cold Air comes from the poles. All get mixed up because the earth is spinning. Everyday cold and warm air meet in the battle of the AIR Masses. When cold and warm air meet.
-
Latitude
Latitude is a measurement in degrees that shows the distance the north or south pole is away from the equator. The equator is 0 degrees. The farther you go from the equator the colder it is because you are farther away from the direct energy of the sun.
-
Ocean Currents
Ocean currents are moving water in oceans. They are cold and deep and come from the poles toward the equator. The warm currents are closer to the equator and they are smaller. The ocean currents go around the entire globe in a loop. It would take 1,000 years for a water particle to go around in this loop.
-
Bodies of Water
Bodies of water like lakes and oceans take longer to warm up then air over the land. The closer you are to bodies of water the more rain you will get. This is because the wind takes moisture up where the air is thinner and causes rain.
-
Elevation
Elevation causes air and temperature changes. The higher you are the colder the temperature is because the air is less dense and the molecules are farther apart. So the lower elevation the air is denser and the molecules are closer together making the temperature warmer because the molecules are able to trap the heat from the sun.
-
Relief
Relief is to describe heights between the highest points and the lowest. Mountains have High relief because there is a bigger difference between the high and low point. This causes more rain or snow on one side of the mountain and less on the other side of the mountain.
