when engaging in sex you transmit microbes between each other
some of those microbes are path. and can cause STI
50-90% of diseases are unreported
if have lesion it increases chance of developing STD
female teens are at an increased risk because the cervical lining is prone to infected
prevent by abstinence and monogomy
use condoms and get circumsiced for protection
Gonoorrhea
s/s: acute inflam 2-5 days after sex in urethra; painful urination, pus discharge, lead to sterility, women could be asymptomatic and have damage to uterin tubes
Pathogen: Neisseria Gonorrhaeal; has fimbriae, capsule, and endotoxin
bacteria attaches to epithelial cells of the mucous membrane
bacteria do not attach to lining of vagina to infect cervix of uterus
anal intercourse can lead to procitis
oral sex can lead to pharyngitis or gingivitis
arthritis, meningitis, and endocarditis
disease only occurs in humans
most cases are in adolescents
risk is increased with frequent of sexual encounters
if a child has this disease it could indicate the child has been abused
dx by the presence of gram-negative diplococci in pus from an inflam. penis is good enough; genetic probes are used to dx of asymptomatic infec.
treat: with cefriaxone and azithromycin
prevent with safe sex practices; give antimicrobial agents to newborn eyes
