Odysseus and his men believe that giving offerings is valued by the gods, the cyclops, and other mortals of higher status.
The messenger god (Hermes) tells Odysseus that he must not turn down a goddess when offered to go to bed with her.
Penelope feels that she must let the suitors into her house and receive their gifts. She still very much values her love and marriage with Odysseus.

Odysseus is loyal to Penelope the entire time he is gone (almost) He loved Circe and Calypso, but his"heart wasn't in it" and he never stopped trying to get home after so many years.

When Odysseus returns home, he is wise by not going right in and greeting Telemachus and Penelope. He would've otherwise been killed
Hospitality
When visiting the cyclops, Odysseus and his men present Polyphemus with offerings.

Penelope and the maids try to deal with the suitors as best as they can. They know that hospitality is valued in their culture. but they want to come up with a plan to get rid of them.
