Assessments
Formative
Formative assessments provide teachers with a way to gather evidence of student learning throughout a unit or lesson. Teachers should use these assessments to monitor and adjust instruction to fit student needs.
Exit tickets at the end of a lesson can assess student learning for that day. Teachers should use this to guide instruction for the next lesson

Interim/Benchmark
This is testing throughout the school year that occurs at the end of the grading period. Students are provided little to no feedback.
-
Assessments given by the district once every grading period. These benchmark tests are modeled after the STAAR test and are subject specific.
Summative
These assessments occur at the end of a unit and cover a larger portion of learning. Teachers can use these assessments to gauge what students have learned over a long period of time.
Short answer questions on an end of unit test will show the teacher what the students know and how they can explain it in their own words.
A project at the end of a unit will allow students to create a model to show what they have learned. For example, at the end of a unit about the water cycle, students could create a model and explain the different phases.
-
Performance
Through performance assessments students complete a task to demonstrate their learning as opposed to answering questions on a test.
An example of a performance assessment in science would be a teacher giving students the parts of an electrical circuit and then requiring the students to assemble the circuit so that the light turns on.
-
Students can create a Google Slides presentation to show what they have learned throughout a unit, and they will get a chance to organize it in a way that makes the most sense to them.
Diagnostic
This type of assessment is a form of pre-assessment for teachers to see what kinds of strengths and weaknesses students have before learning begins. It is best to give these assessments early on in the school year or in a new grading period.
Running records in reading show teachers what students are still struggling with when they read independently.
The Where To Start Word Test is a great diagnostic assessment for teachers to appropriately assign students a guided reading level. Students read a list of words until they make 3 mistakes in a row.
